Cyndi Steiner
Cyndi served as the NJBWC’s executive director from July 2012 through June 2019, when family issues required her to take a part-time role and then to step down. Advocacy wins under Cyndi’s direction include the 2014-2020 pursuit of Norfolk Southern Railroad for the Essex-Hudson Greenway and engagement of Open Space Institute for the successful negotiation of the rail line, Complete Streets rebuild of Route 35 at the Jersey Shore after Hurricane Sandy, safety improvements for bike riders to the George Washington Bridge during the “Restoring the George” 10-year cable replacement project (removal of the stairs on the north path and rebuild of all four entrances to the paths), Complete Streets implementation policy for Monmouth County, spearheading the advocacy for the creation of the state’s Regional TAP Program, passage in 2018 of A4165/S2894 (requires the state’s driver’s education course, manual and license exam to include bike rider and pedestrian safety information), organization of the annual NJ Bike & Walk Summit from 2013-2019, leader of the NJ delegation to the annual National Bike Summit from 2013-2018, creation and launch of the Bike Depot Program in New Jersey, with Depots in Montclair, Bloomfield and in the City of Elizabeth, and the rescue of $12 million of the state’s Transportation Alternatives (TAP) funds that were set to lapse back to the federal government in September 2018. She has also helped launch and provide guidance to more than a handful of local advocacy organizations, including the Asbury Park Complete Streets Coalition, Bike & Walk Montclair, Bike & Walk Millburn, Friends of the Ice & Iron Greenway, Northern Valley Greenway Committee, Safe Streets Essex and others. Cyndi is also a certified League Cycling Instructor with the League of American Bicyclists.
Previous roles Cyndi held are: Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of Bike New York, where she served from 2001 to 2019; member of the National Bike Walk Action Advisory Committee; member of the Executive Committee of the New Jersey Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Council of NJDOT, and Advisory Board Member of the September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance.
Prior to her work in bicycle and pedestrian advocacy, Cyndi had a twenty-year career in corporate project management and information systems management, having worked for Ernst & Young LLP as an assistant director in their global information systems division.
Cyndi holds an MS degree from Stevens Institute of Technology in information systems management and a BS degree from Cornell University.
Richard J Jackson MD MPH FAAP HonAIA HonASLA
Richard J. Jackson MD MPH FAAP HonAIA HonASLA is Professor emeritus at the Fielding School of Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles. A pediatrician, he has served in many leadership positions with the California Health Department, including the highest as the State Health Officer.
For nine years he was Director of the CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health and received the Presidential Distinguished Service award. In October, 2011 he was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
Dick Jackson lectures and speaks on many issues, particularly those related to the built environment and health. He has co-authored the books: Urban Sprawl and Public Health, Making Healthy Places, and Designing Healthy Communities, which is also a PBS series. In 2015, Professor Jackson received the Henry Hope Reed Award for his contributions to the field of Architecture.
